A common cause of low back pain can be problems with the disc -- the fibrous cushion between each vertebra. A bulging, herniated or ruptured disc can irritate the nerves that travel directly from the spinal cord. Alongside low back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs may all be a result of disc irritation. Disc herniations can happen to anyone, however those in poor physical condition and those with jobs that include heavy lifting, long periods of sitting, standing or lots of bending, are more prone. Emotional stress or long periods of inactivity may intensify symptoms or trigger the appearance of previous problems.
Luckily, in most circumstances, disc problems are easily treated with conservative interventions. Chiropractic spinal manipulation and flexion distraction/decompression have been demonstrated to be safe and effective tools in the management of disc problems. Manipulation is especially effective when combined with therapeutic exercise. In most circumstances, spine surgery and injections are not necessary in the management of disc problems - and they often cause more problems than they're worth.
