The carpal tunnel is a small space made up of bones surrounding and tissues on top, located in the wrist. This space allows for the median nerve to pass through, to innervate the hand. Any swelling or compression of the carpal tunnel can cause pressure on the that nerve, resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cutting off or limiting feeling and movement to certain parts of the hand.

CTS may be caused by repetitive motion, like typing, construction or factory work or repetitive sports. The pain associated with CTS can be debilitating and severe.

Some patients may be misdiagnosed with CTS and simply have misalignments of the spine or disc degeneration causing irritation of the median nerve.

A chiropractor can investigate and locate any misalignments in your spinal vertebrae that may be causing compression of the nerves. Chiropractic methods to treat CTS can include manipulation of the wrist, elbow and cervical spine. Infrared light therapy and cold laser therapy have also been shown to help with CTS.

If CTS is left untreated it can cause permanent damage to the hand or thumb. If you think you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, a quick consultation with Dr. Hagy can kick-start the healing process and potentially prevent unnecessary surgery.
